I'VE JUST SEEN A FACE
character name: Wesley Jackson. nicknames: Wes. age: 25. gender: Male. sexuality: Heterosexual. pb: Joe Anderson.
THE LONG WINDING ROAD
occupation: Sous-chef at the Sky Room. residence: Balmoral Apartments. been in vegas for how long and why: Two years. He was working as part of a team in a nice, little restaurant back home all through his senior year of college and for six months after that. Some guy in a suit came to him one day and offered him a sous-chef position at a Las Vegas five star restaurant. The money sounded great, so Wes took it. Who wouldn't want to live in Sin City, anyway?
FULL OF EXCITING STORIES
likes: Red wine, pot, brunettes, blondes, redheads, sleeping in, classic rock, roller coasters, experimenting and trying new things, walking. dislikes: Shaving, getting up early, yelling, hiccups, the feel of new shoes, shitty weather, vultures, sunglasses at night or indoors, cravings, judgemental people. personality: reckless – it’s a word often used by other to describe him. When faced with an obstacle, Wes won’t give the possible solutions much thought before going with the one that sounds best to him and just applying it roughly. It’s like he’s not even aware that to every decision there’s consequences, it’s just not something that he stops and ponders about. Even though he prefers actions to words (throwing fists instead of being diplomatic), the same process of thought applies here: he never really thinks before speaking. And he doesn’t find anything wrong with that. Why does everybody gets so worked up about it? He’s only speaking his mind. The night before a big test you’d find him at a party getting high, or joking with the police officers while he’s being searched, flirting with a waitress after losing big at a poker game. Maybe that’s why he’s never been able to have a romantic relationship for very long.
loving – just because he appears to go through life with nothing to lose, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t value the people who love him and whom he loves in return. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for a member of his family. Towards his mother he’s very affectionate, as well as towards his beloved grandfather and he’s always warm with old acquaintances, good friends and the people around him. He might not be the most stable companion but that’s something none of his girlfriend could ever complain about: getting affection.
dedicated – alright, he could have devoted a little more time and effort to school. Or relationships. But those were never things that really get the attention of a young man who knows there’s always something greater out there. When something does grab it, though, you can be sure Wes will be relentless. Going to bed with the most frigid girl in school. Getting a particular recipee right. Learning how to speak Spanish. His attention never wavers when it comes to something like this. He’ll push and practice and eventually dominate the art until it’s time to move on to something else. But that’s why you’ll never eat a mediocre dish coming from him, that’s the one area in which he is a perfectionist.
extrovert – Wes makes friends quite easily. He gets along with most anybody and is able to find allies in practically anybody he meets. There’s always at least one person on his side. He likes to have a laugh and judges absolutely no one which is maybe why people feel comfortable around him, knowing they can just be themselves. If you have a weird fetish, you can tell Wesley because he won’t make fun of you or tell you how sick you are, if he’s got an opinion at all. He might only joke about it like he usually does when a situation is turning obscure.
genuine – no matter who he’s with, Wes doesn’t change. He hasn’t got a formal self and a casual self and he’s not one person around his friends and another around his parents or around strangers. He doesn’t watch his language depending on where he is. He doesn’t keep much from his family that he doesn’t from his peers. He knows who he is and if asked to act differently, he’d find it very difficult. It’s just easier to have little to nothing to hide and not worry about impressions and protocol.
ephemeral dark moods – when you get Wes angry, you’re likely to get either punched in the face or insulted, depending on who you are (he’d hardly dare throw a punch at his father or at a woman). You might get him to storm off and slam or break something. When his temper rises, Wes needs a loud bang to make his point, to properly get across just what he’s feeling. Don’t expect him to discuss the situation civilly or to sulk for a long time. Once he’s managed to let it all out through one of the aforementioned methods, the anger will subside fairly quickly.
straight-forward - Wes doesn't talk about people behind their back, nor does he like gossip. When somebody comes along with some juicy bit of information, he wanders off elsewhere unisterested. It's likely that if Wes feels strongly about something that concerns you, you'll hear about it from him. Otherwise, he keeps the 'i like you's and 'i dislike you's to himself. Surely, if he likes you or not, you'll notice, never fear. He's quite transparent. fears: Going back to rehab is right now the main one for obvious reasons. He's strying to behave and stay away from those substances that almost got him fired more than once. Not being there when grampa Albert kicks the bucket, that would majorly suck. And finally, he fears cockroaches. Badly. They're fucking smart. secrets: He overdosed once when he was eighteen, but a friend of his managed to help him out without parents ever knowing. Also, the car wasn't stolen. Wes crashed into a tree and left the car in the woods. goals: To be able to make a living of what he loves for many more years. To stay clean and out of trouble. To eventually settle down and reproduce.
WHEN I GET HOME
family: Lane (Marander) Jackson. She's a sweet woman with a sharo sense of humour and all the patience in the world. Very supportive and understanding. She's good with plants and works around the neighborhood making yards look beautiful.
Harold Jackson is a man who's temper is something to cower away from, yet his family never does because they know the bark is worse than the bite. He's very practical and somewhat old-fashioned, the proud father of two boys.
Clavin Jackson, 28, is a columnist for a big paper in New York. The odd one of the family. He's the quiet one and the loner, although he knows his family's there for him. Wes and Calvin are quite close.
Arnold Jackson. He baught the boys their firts Hustlers and taught them how to swear. He enjoyes pissing Harold off and adores Lane with a passion. history: Nothing too intense.
Harold and his two brothers worked at their father's auto parts shop and one day in came a lovely girl named Lane. Harold felt attracted to that girl. He asked her out. She said no. He asked her out again. She giggled. He punched the air... mentally. She said ok. He smiled and as she left the shop after writing down her number for him, he punched the air. They were young and innocent and fun and in love and after a small wedding that followed only a year of dating, they were quick to procreate.
Wesley was born and raised in Orlando. He had a pretty normal childhood with a some havoc here and there. His grades weren't good like his brother's and his parents were called to the principal's office a couple of times. They celebrated Christmas and Thanksgiving with all of their cousins and aunts and uncles and grandparents and it was always Grampa Arnold who managed to make them interesting. He once gave Aunt Martha a vibrator.
Wes enjoyed partying with his friends, destroying town a little bit, smoking pot, underage drinking and exploring his sexuality. He had no concrete plan about his future. He formed a band and for a while thought he'd make aliving out of music. But it was during those rehearsal days that he started going inside the kitchen. He'd observe his mom as a child and take in everything she did in there. Eventually he began experimenting and making food for his band, for when they took breaks from rehearsing in his garage. They liked it so much he started stealing cooking books from the local librarie and got better.
By the time Wes graduated high school he knew what he wanted to do. He got into gastronomy and actually studied six months in Spain (the first words he learned in Spanish were curse words or sex words). He moved to Vegas two years ago where he is working at a five star restaurant. Since the Head chef is a lazy bum and rarely decides to leave his office, Wes has had time to learn how to take control of the kitchen and is looking forward to that promotion.
The downside is that Wes always had a taste for substances and binging on life. Moving to Sin City probably wasn't the best decision for someone like him and a little over a year into his new life he had to go into rehab. Luckily, he's been clean for several months now and trying to steer off that course. pets: Jagger The Dog. He's old and lives with his parents.
