Perry has never been a very charismatic person. Even as a child he was kind of quiet, but not quite as shy and reserved as his mother was. He’s not the type of person you’re drawn to when he walks into the room. He doesn’t have a presence that demands the attention of others and rather than soaking up the lime light, he’s got his back pressed up against the wall. If surrounded by a group of people he’s unfamiliar with, he’ll remain tentative and brief with his words. His tranquil almost sedate nature renders him almost incapable of causing a fuss or making a scene. He doesn’t have loud outbursts, nor does he display intense outrage to a dramatic degree. It’s rare that you’ll ever find him raise his voice past its average volume, and tales of his yelling are almost regarded as mythical and unheard of. All in all he’s relatively easy going in his nature
While he is gifted with many things, eloquence isn’t one of them. Perry has difficulties explaining himself and expressing how he’s feeling. He’s not unintelligent, it’s just that most of a time there is a disconnected between his brain and his tongue and the message he’s trying to convey is lost in translation. People often get very frustrated with him because it’s hard to understand him. He may say one thing, but chances are he was trying to say the other thing, and this irritates people. Often people will dismiss him and his feelings because he’s completely unable to give people an accurate depiction of how he’s feeling. He’s also lacking in verbal tact. He often says the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong moment which causes a lot of frustration and grief for the poor boy.
While he is quieter than most and is incapable of communicating his ideas effectively, that doesn’t mean he’s a complete imbecile. On the contrary, he’s very thoughtful. In the rare moments where he can manage to express himself and do his intelligence justice, one can see that he’s actually quite an interesting and original thinker. He tends to analyze things from a different angle than most, and if and when it’s possible, offers an insightful and intelligent opinion.
That being said, Perry can be a rather daft at times. He’s not quick on his feet or with his whit. He’s the kind of guy that sits there for a while, trying to think of an accurate come-back to an insult but not being able to think of anything till minutes after the confrontation has concluded. It takes a while for him to think of things and come up with answers. He’s also not very intuitive. He doesn’t pick up on telling signs in people’s body language. Because of this, he finds it excruciatingly difficult to understand woman because they have a tendency to say one thing but feel another way. Small, but equally important things slip by him like a lingering glance, a telling hand gesture, or a dirty look. Call him an idiot, call him clueless, whatever. He still doesn’t get it if you don’t explain it well to him.
Perry jumps right into things without a second thought. Because of this trait he jokes that “natural selection” is out to get him. Often on the drop of a hat Perry can make the rashest decisions. If something strikes him suddenly as a good idea, he’ll go for it in a second without thinking of what the consequences or ramifications might be. Of course impulsivity isn’t wholly an unappealing quality. In fact it keeps him spontaneous; however it does mean he can be a little careless.
For a guy who doesn’t know where he sees himself in two years, he’s incredibly tenacious. While he doesn’t have a clue of what he wants to do with his life, he holds strong to the idea that if he keeps working hard he’ll get somewhere, he doesn’t know where, but he doesn’t really care; just as long as he survives. While his luck with employment has been lacking recently, that doesn’t stop him from giving up all together and losing hope. Regardless of the number of pink slips he receives he pushes on, finding another something to get into to support himself. He remains steadfast to the idea that someday he will become a someone and establish himself in society as someone others can call useful.
HE HIDES FROM CONFLICT AND VICTEMIZES HIMSELF. You know; he’s your typical passive aggressive male. He lives a life of empty promises while scampering away from confrontation.
Perry is easily persuaded. If you manage to convince him, or if you pressure him towards an idea, 9 times out of ten he will submit to your will. This is a dangerous quality for everyone, but for Perry it almost killed him. It was his weak willed nature and a pack of influential friends that lead him down the path of hard drinks and hard liquor. Because of this inability a assert himself or say no, Perry is incredibly susceptible to being taken advantage of. If ever a person needs someone to use, Perry’s your guy because if you bat your eyelashes a few times and use a sad voice, he’ll bend to your will and do whatever it is that’ll please you.
Needless to say, Perry is a train wreck of a human being. He has a hard time remembering things as well as keeping himself organized which often contributes to his downfall. It’s hard for him to keep jobs because he can’t seem to get himself together enough to be presentable. He’s the kind of guy that always seems to be frenzied and worried about something he forgot to do. He’s always looking for a misplaced something and is constantly rushing things at the last possible moment. He’s very in the present so it’s hard for him to think well into the future and budget his time or remember things that were supposed to have been done in a prompt and timely manner.
Perry shows a certain pointed unwillingness to open up to people. He tends to keep his feelings guarded and it’s hard for a person to really get to know him inside and out. He’s very cautious of himself. He doesn’t like to feel venerable in front of others and having someone look right through his skin and into his soul is uncomfortable. He doesn’t like people being able to dig their way inside of him and search around. Often times he appears hostile and cold because of his guarded nature but once you come to understand the kind of person that he is, you get that it’s a safety mechanism of his.
Once you do get passed that soft-spoken guarded shell of his, a world of tenderness is open to you. He has a ridicules amount of love in his heart for the people he cares about and while at times because of his inarticulate nature he has trouble expressing that love, he always finds a way to let you know he cares. While he may not say that he loves you because saying it makes him uncomfortable, he will express small but equally tender gestures to let you know how he feels. Instead of giving you a big hug and a kiss and a long profession of love, he’ll tug at your sleeve quietly give you a fleeting look and then wrap his pinky finger around yours. While his methods of expressing tenderness are perhaps not what is considered conventional, that doesn’t make them any less genuine.
fears: - R E L A P S I N G; He’s terrified of returning to his old habits and getting sucked back into heroine and the other miscellaneous substances he used to partake in. The sad thing is though that Perry relapsing isn’t far from likely. After all he didn’t get to complete his time in rehab. Who’s to say that he won’t go back to the old familiar stone once again? While the feeling of getting high is incomparable to any form of pleasure he’s ever felt, the thought of being reduced to the sniveling pathetic human being he used to be on that shit is terrifying. He’s afraid that if faced with his past demons shoved inside a dirty syringe, he won’t be able to say no.
- O P E N I N G U P; While commitment isn’t a big issue, opening up and giving everything he has to a person is frightening. He’s afraid of cutting himself open to allow a glimpse of what’s on the inside and being betrayed. Being rendered exposed and venerable is one of the most terrifying things for him so it’s hard for him to really open up and be real with another person, no matter how close he might think he is to them. After hearing the tale of his mother opening up her heart to the wrong man, he’s afraid of letting anyone in.
- B U G S; Isn’t everyone to a degree afraid of them? Well Perry is terrified. Deathly terrified actually. He hates the thought of ticks, fleas, horseflies. He can’t stand to be in a room if there’s a fly buzzing around in it, and the sight of a cockroach makes him jump. However the insect he’s most afraid of is the moth. He can’t stand moths, he’s so terrified of them that he will actually run and hide at the sight of one.
secrets: - D R U G A D D I C T ; That is one of his secrets that he doesn’t often disclose to people. It’s a part of his life that he’d rather not share because of the shame and humiliation that surrounds it. He keeps it hidden so that he’s spared the cocked brows and pointed whispering in his direction from other people. He’s noticed that a certain amount of loneliness comes with being a drug addict. No matter how much time and effort you take in informing people of your situation and the reasons behind using, they’ll always think of you as “the drug addict” even long after you’ve quit.
- S T E A L I N G; Something he’d rather not have people know is that he steals wherever he can from his job. When he used to work as a bell hop at the Luxor, he used to steal the complimentary shampoos, conditioners, and soaps that were provided in the rooms. Financial issues were big for him so in order to fund his grocery shopping and room fee he budgeted by taking the free stuff at his work. It’s a habit he’s picked up from being skint all the time.
- W H O R E; Not really. But he has been paid for sex before. When he was putting all his money behind his drug addiction he had to earn all the money he could to keep himself fully functional. There was a woman who had taken a bit of a fancy for him and offered him money in exchange for his body. Of course he agreed because he needed the cash. He doesn’t look on that part of his life with any pride whatsoever.
goals: His first goal is to get a high paying steady job so that he doesn’t have to live in the kind of condition he does now. His second goal is to reconnect with his parents and regain their trust and approval after it had been lost when he started getting into bad situations, and his third goal is to travel. A lofty ambitious goal, but one he still wishes to pursue.

history: Perry’s birth doesn’t start with a love story. There was no torrid romantic affair that climaxed on a note so loud and overwhelming that all else around it shattered. Perry wasn’t the love child; he was the awkward situation for both his parents to deal with. Julius Pinches was a young man of 20 when he met Varian Shaw. It was at the University of Los Angeles in California that the two met and became fast friends. Julius was a business major with a minor in communications, and blatantly homosexual, where as Varian was undecided in her studies and was a self conscious girl with a meek and mild disposition. The two were complete opposites in every way, but remained friends regardless of their differences. Julius regarded her as really only a casual friend, but Varian was enthralled with this charismatic man and soon developed rash feelings that should have remained dormant. One night there was a dorm party that the two of them attended and once the booze started pouring they lost track of everything, not realizing until the next morning as they sifted through bed sheets and clothing that something had happened. Something BIG.
Turmoil for the friends ensued as Varian desperately tried to convince Julius that there was a spark between them. She’d plead with him, separate him from the group to talk with him alone, offer herself to him, but it was clear that he wasn’t interested. It was a one time thing that would never happen again. After all, the cups were full and the night was long; even a gay man would bend a little after consuming that much alcohol. Things continued on dismally from there, a lot of public humiliation ensued, and many tears were shed. As if things weren’t bad enough, to add insult to injury, Varian had come down with an awful case of morning sickness. After figuring out she was indeed pregnant she told Julius. He didn’t believe her; he thought she was scamming him, guilt tripping him into entering a relationship that his mind and his body told him was wrong. Shamed and embarrassed, Varian dropped out of collage to live with her parents. She decided to keep the baby.
That baby was Paris Shaw, or rather Perry Shaw. Born on July the 14th, Perry came into this world under awkward circumstances. Along with the fact that his biological parents were estranged, he also came out feet first with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. He always supposed that was the world’s way of telling him that he wasn’t just a regular accident, but a rather a big mistake. For a good portion of Perry’s childhood he remained with his mother within the confines of his grandparent’s condo in Chula Vista, California. The quarters were small, but Varian ensured her parents that the time where she got a job and found a home of her own was nigh; she just needed a little push to get her going. While her parents were perhaps upset to a degree that their only daughter had dropped out of collage, had a baby, and was seeking refuge in their space they’d set up for retirement, they weren’t heartless; they couldn’t turn her away.
The thing he remembered most about his childhood was perhaps his grandparents. While at first the idea of their daughter becoming unexpectedly pregnant was lacking in regards to the fantasy they’d fashioned in which they became grandparents, they fell instantly in love with little Perry. He remembered the way his grandfather seemed to always wear Hawaiian shirts regardless of the state of the whether or what season it happened to be. He remembered the way his grandmother used to shimmy her shoulders and wink every time her age was mentioned and after she’d reply boisterously; “I may be old but I’m still fabulous!” He remembered the times where his grandfather awarded him the title of “Official Taste Tester Maestro” and would always concoct strange dishes that Perry got to take the first bite out of.
His childhood was a pleasant one despite the absence of a father in his life; however he found that as far as male figures went, his grandfather did more than enough to satisfy the position. While he was perhaps not as painfully shy as his mother was, Perry was quite a docile child. Even though friends were in abundance at the elementary school he attended, he preferred to remain on his own quite a bit and grew a fondness for music, in particular the saxophone. He wasn’t particularly good at it, but still it gave him some joy. The saxophone, however, turned out to be a pivotal interment (no pun intended) in his life. One night at a school band concert that he was to be playing a solo in, he met his father for the first time. A loose lipped collage friend that Varian still kept in contact with mentioned to Julius about the existence of Perry and immediately came down to see him. The meeting was awkward to say the least. Varian was very guarded in regards to speaking with him and Julius was at a loss for words. He felt ashamed of himself for not having believed Varian in the first place when she’d told him that she was pregnant.
Julius tried his best to integrate himself into Perry’s life, to connect in that way that only fathers and sons can, but things were stiff. Even till this day they never really did mend things completely. While the attempted was admirable, the both of them knew that they would never be like a regular father and son. The awkward feeling of having a dinner alone together with nothing to say would never pass, the silent wishing as they watched another father and son play catch would continue on, and the emptiness that came with missing so many important birthdays would linger.
Also the fact that his father was gay didn’t make things easier. While it became a regular occurrence to see his father with his life partner Harrison, it was tough having to go to school and have your school mates know that your family was different. Perry was subjected to merciless teasing over the fact. He was the kid with the gay dad and no one really bothered to learn more than that about him. Now Perry was a very easy going teenager. He was quiet, sweet, and calm, but unfortunately didn’t know how to assert himself. He was the kind of kid that was easily swayed one way and easy to convince or pushed over. So in attempts to rid himself of the ridicule that came with being his father’s son, he started going out to parties more. After a while he managed to shed his pervious title and made a new one for himself; the party kid. Which, granted, wasn’t much better, but at least it was something.
In his later years of high school Perry began getting into trouble in regards to his partying nature. He’d been arrested once for carrying alcohol on him, he’d often pass out somewhere and forget to call home to alert his family on where he was, and he started dabbling in harder substances; which is why it was nothing short of a miracle when he had been accepted into a community collage. His grades had been less than average, his attendance level at school had been abysmal but somehow he managed to scrounge up a chance at a post secondary education. For a time he remained somewhat focused on his studies, majoring in a subject he didn't have much of a passion for.
Soon enough, 4 years of school passed and somehow amidst the binge drinking and hours spent cramming for finals he had graduated with a degree in American History. He was caught in an awkward position. He was in the strange transferring stage between student to real life adult. The pressure of becoming someone and having nothing to rely on or fall back on frightened him. He had no plan for the future. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life and was faced with important decisions to make. One night he was approached by one of his collage buddies on going to Las Vegas for the weekend. Perry agreed and the two of them drove east from Chula Vista all the way to Nevada.
A weekend soon turned into a week, than into 2 weeks, and then into a month. Perry became caught up in a life of gambling, drinking, and harmful substances. But when your world is moving at breakneck speeds, everything starts to spiral out of control. Amidst the fluctuations of debt and comfortable living, Perry developed a serious drug problem. At first it was cocaine and soon it escaladed to heroine. The prospect of doing something so bad but feeling so good was electrifying. But soon the joy ride became less fun. The constant need for the poison was painful. The highs didn’t seem so exhilarating and the act of shooting up with your buddies seemed more of a chore than any real fun. It wasn’t until one night where he had a mother of a bad trip and woke up cold and alone behind Circus Circus coughing up tar-like globs of toxic blood that he realized he actually was killing himself.
Shamed, and in desperate need of help he took whatever money he had and checked himself into a rehab clinic. The detox was long and hard, the chills were unbearable, and the counseling sessions were excruciating, but ultimately he knew he had made the right decision. He never did get to finish his full session at the rehabilitation center on account of insufficient funds, but he’s remained clean for almost a year. For now, he’s just trying to clean up the shambles of his life around him and make a living for himself starting from scratch. pets: - Drafus - Perry's Russian Tortoise
